There is one line on our price list that customers argue with more than any other, and it is not a price. It is the 12 inch stack limit on concrete, brick and rock.
It sounds arbitrary. The trailer has 6 ft tall walls, and we are telling you to fill one foot of it. From the outside that reads like a company being difficult, or trying to sell you a second trip.
It is neither. Here is the actual reason, because once you understand it the rule stops being annoying and starts being obvious.
A trailer runs out of weight long before it runs out of room
Everything we haul falls into one of two categories: stuff limited by volume and stuff limited by weight.
Household junk is volume-limited. A couch is enormous and weighs almost nothing relative to its size. Same with mattresses, cabinets, drywall, brush and boxes. You will fill the trailer to the top rail and still be well under any weight that matters. That is the normal case, and it is why a whole two-car garage fits in one pull.
Concrete is the opposite. Concrete runs about two tons per cubic yard. Brick, block, rock, dirt and clay roofing tile are all in the same neighborhood.
So a layer of concrete one foot deep across the floor of the trailer, which looks like almost nothing, weighs many times what the same trailer holds when it is stuffed to the rail with furniture. You have used maybe a sixth of the visible space and all of the available weight.
That is the whole answer. The trailer is not full. It is *heavy*, and heavy is the limit that counts.
Where the number comes from
Every trailer has an axle rating. It is the maximum weight the axles, tires, bearings and brakes are engineered to carry, and it is set by the manufacturer, not by us.
Florida DOT enforces weight limits on the road accordingly. Running a trailer over its rated axle weight is a violation, and it is one that gets noticed at a scale house or at a weigh-in on a construction site.
The legal part is honestly the smaller problem. The bigger one is physics.
An overloaded trailer does not feel overloaded until you need to stop. Then it feels like everything at once.
Trailer brakes are sized for the rated load. Go past it and stopping distance grows, the tow vehicle starts getting pushed around at intersections, and tires run hot on a Tampa afternoon in a way that ends with one letting go on the Selmon. There is no version of that story worth $100 of saved disposal cost.
The 12 inch mark is the working number that keeps a load inside the rating with room for error, because material never loads perfectly evenly and nobody is weighing each wheelbarrow on the way in.
What this means for a real demo job
Most residential concrete work fits inside the limit without anyone thinking about it.
- A torn-out front walkway
- A single slab where a shed used to sit
- A section of cracked driveway
- The brick edging around a flower bed
- Broken pavers from a patio repair
Those jobs are typically one pull, and the concrete rides in the bottom of the trailer with lighter construction debris loaded on top of it. That is the ideal load, and it is worth mentioning that concrete on the bottom is also how you keep the weight over the axles instead of on the tongue.
The jobs that go to two pulls or more are the big ones. A full driveway replacement. A pool deck removal. A whole patio. If that is your project, you are not getting bad news at the end. You are getting a plan at the start, and the second pull is the same rate as the first.
Why we bother explaining it
We could just say "12 inch max" and leave it at the bottom of the pricing page in small type, which is roughly what most hauling companies do.
The problem is that the rule only works if you know about it before you load. A customer who fills a trailer three feet deep with broken patio has not saved anything. They have built a load that cannot legally leave the driveway, and now it has to come back out by hand. That is a genuinely bad afternoon and it is entirely preventable with one sentence on a phone call.
So we say it up front, we put it on what we take, and we say it again when somebody books a job that sounds like demo. If you are unsure whether your pile counts as heavy, describe it or send a photo. The answer takes thirty seconds and it is free.
The short version
The trailer holds volume. Concrete brings weight. Weight is the limit that has a law attached to it, and no amount of money changes an axle rating.
One foot of dense material, lighter debris on top, and if the job is bigger than that we plan two pulls before anybody starts loading.
